JLR and Tata Communications strengthen partnership to deliver smarter, data-driven connected cars

Monday, January 20, 2025

JLR  and Tata Communications are set to enhance JLR’s connected vehicle ecosystem, transforming the driving experience for customers globally through the Tata Communications MOVE™ platform. The collaboration will enable JLR’s next-generation, software-defined vehicles to enjoy seamless connectivity and access to intelligent services even in the most remote locations across 120 countries. The new collaboration is an extension of their existing partnership and aims to future-proof the automaker’s digital transformation .

Powered by Tata Communications’ MOVE™ platform, JLR’s upcoming mid-size SUVs built on the new Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) will provide seamless transition between mobile networks and operators, enabling non-stop access to personalised connected services, such as streaming media. The platform will also enable greater and safer data exchange between JLR and its customers’ vehicles, providing more efficient over-the-air (SOTA) software updates and supporting the deployment of evolving Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Every day, JLR’s connected vehicle fleet generates 2.5 terabytes (TB) of data, with an average of half a million electronic control units (ECUs) being updated per month over the last 12 months. Using the Tata Communications MOVE™ platform will increase this data exchange and enable JLR engineers to leverage deeper insights, monitor vehicle performance in real-time and enable faster over-the-air updates to improve vehicle maintenance and servicing, reducing costs for both car owners and JLR. The advanced vehicles, which are expected to hit the roads in 2026, will provide a smarter driving experience.

The introduction of Tata Communications MOVE™ will offer JLR customers:

rugged wireless communications technologies to track vehicles in the most demanding environments;
more frequent and frequent vehicle software updates delivered over the air to improve vehicle diagnostics and updates;
tailored connections that allow customers and their families to stay connected to their favorite apps and features, wherever they are in the world;
simplified, easy-to-implement connectivity plans, accessible through a single provider.

Marco Bijvelds, Vice President and Global Head, Tata Communications MOVE  ™ , said: “The automotive industry is constantly innovating to meet evolving customer demands. Last year, our digital fabric enabled seamless connectivity across all JLR manufacturing sites globally. As part of our expanded partnership, we are now powering JLR’s software-defined vehicle journey globally and enabling them to deliver advanced driving features in their cars. The insights gained from the data exchanged through our platform will enable JLR to deliver personalized experiences to their customers, opening up new revenue streams.”

Mark Brogden , Director of Off-Board Digital Product Platform at JLR, said: “JLR was the first luxury vehicle manufacturer to introduce the dual modem, dual eSIM design for enhanced connectivity with the launch of the Defender in 2020. The partnership with Tata Communications is the next step in our software-defined vehicle journey, delivering highly secure and cost-effective data connectivity across 120 countries. Starting in 2026 with our next generation of mid-size luxury SUVs, Tata Communications MOVE™ aims to deliver seamless connected experiences for our customers, delivering features and new software updates over the air to meet the expectations of our luxury customer base.”
